I recently got home from a 2 week self catering holiday in Dorset.  I had resolved that rather than traveling to the beach of the Spanish coast, we would preserve some cash, take a chance on the British weather and drive to the picturesque sands of Bournemouth in Dorset.  It seems as if I was not the only person as Bournemouth beach was crammed and with all the things the county of Dorset has to offer, it is not much of a surprise.

Poole and Bournemouth are really interesting regions of Dorset to see but the area has so lots more to give.  There were a wide range of sights and sounds and sites to see.  My favourites of the different tourist attractions would have to be Monkey World, The Tank Museum and Bournemouth beach.  I had such a good time at all these places and would extremely advocate them to people I meet.

This was one of the reasons I decided that my family and I would stay in a holiday cottage in Dorset rather than a hotel.  This meant that we were fortunate enough to be able to rest in a place where we found we were comfortable and free to do what we wished.  The property was likewise a great base from where we would go to the local holidaymaker sights easy.  We were fortunate enough that our holiday cottage was situated less then 30minutes away from many of these areas.

The country cottage we remained in was adjacent to a country pub that we regularly attended, where we struck up a friendly relationship with the pub landlord.  We found out from the landlord that Dorset holiday cottages were really popular in the country and that he often met tourists like us that stay in them.  If you are considering of taking a trip to Dorset then I would urge you into staying in a cottage Dorset.  The welcome you will receive from the individuals is terrific, it is a good deal forgiving on the wallet than a trip overseas and you will go home feeling mellow and fresh.

Alnwick Castle
Medieval history comes to life with a short trip to Alnwick Castle, but beware its checkered past may not be for the feint of heart.

The castle itself has proven popular with movie makers over the years and has made an appearance (most notably) in the recent Harry Potter films as well as ‘Elizabeth’ and the BBC series ‘The Black Adder’.

Buckingham Palace was originally named Buckingham House. It was originally a large townhouse, constructed in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham. It is actually the town house that forms the main core of the palace as we are familiar with today.

Throughout the following 3 quarters of a century Buckingham House was made larger by the addition of 3 wings around a central courtyard. The main architects responsible for these constructions were Edward Blore and John Nash. John Nash was also responsible for the interior design of the monumental staterooms.

The well known architect Aston Webb was responsible for the building of the principal facade of Buckingham Palace which he re-designed in 1912. Webb along with Sir Thomas Brock (the sculptor) were the winners of a competition to design a memorial to Queen Victoria. This memorial is still seen today.

The Queen has many other royal residences besides Buckingham Palace. Annually the Queen spends Christmas at Sandringham House in Norfolk. Sandringham House is one of the Queen’s private royal residences.

Another private residence is Balmoral Castle, found in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The Queen was at Balmoral Castle when she was informed of the shocking incident involving Diana, Princess of Wales.
