When traveling to an unfamiliar location it can be a difficult decision about where to stay. What are the things you should consider when deciding the type of accommodation to book.

As you know, chain hotels tend to be the larger, “cookie cutter” type of accommodations. Although, even if you choose a chain hotel, they are not necessarily company-run. There are many “chains” that are actually individual franchises. Most often, franchise-type hotes are required to meet some basic company standards to remain part of the chain. The key concept here being “minimum standards”. That means that not all locations in this chain are necessarily as good (clean, maintained, etc.) as others.

Often travelers will pick a chain hotel in an unfamiliar city so they feel like they’ll know what to expect – no surprises. We did just that on our first trip to Belize. We reserved accommodations at a well-known chain hotel for our first two nights in Belize City. It was a mistake. We left after only one night for several reasons (not very clean, air conditioning didn’t work, etc.) and found, with the help of a guide book, the most wonderful B&B – the Fort Street Guesthouse. It was like we stepped into an old movie – four poster beds, mosquito netting, amazing ambience, terrific owners (they mailed us a Christmas card for years after our visit) and interesting guests. It made our visit to Belize City memorable.

So, let’s lay out the pros and cons so you can make an informed decision.

In a lot of countries there are agencies that rate independently owned accommodations, particularly Bed and Breakfast establishments. It’s a good idea to see if the property you’re looking at belongs to an association or has been rated by a tourism agency.

With advanced planning you can make your vacation a memorable experience. Even if some things go wrong, hey, it’s all part of the experience!

Free Hotel Accommodations

The real “Stairway to Heaven” (No, not the Led Zeppelin song!) is located in the Philippines. In beautiful, rugged Banaue, you will be able to see one of the most incredible engineering feats ever pulled off by primitive man. The rice terraces of Banaue is one stop that must be made while you are in the Philippines, and it is always the sometimes long and arduous bus ride.

Accommodation in this lake spa resort is excellent with beautiful views to boot. If you are looking to lodge in the Mountain Harbor Lodge area for that typically rustic feel, you may check into a lake view guest room which is both cozy and comfortable. It comes with one king bed or two queen beds, a sleeper sofa, a small refrigerator, microwave and VCR. You will also get hot coffee, hot cocoa, and popcorn here.

During off season the rates are as low as for two persons. If you are looking to check in with your family, though, you might like to consider the rather large Lodge Cottages with either the view of the lake or the forest. These cottages come with two bedrooms, bathrooms with bath tubs and hot water, well-appointed kitchen, and also a quaint stone fireplace.

Second, there are fewer guests frequenting hotels. By the end of the first full week in May, Smith Travel Research reported occupancy rates fell 14% year over year. Pricewaterhouse Coopers had only forecast a drop of 3.5%, which would have already put the industry at lower rates than in 1971!

We have to roughly compare these numbers with the hospitality employment data over the same period. From June 2008 to June 2009, the ADP report shows the Accommodation Industry’s employment dropped 8.3%, from 1,955,300 to 1,793,900. Also, most of the hotels in the survey are larger or midsize organizations, which, as is the current lay-off trend in America, kept a larger percentage of employees than small businesses.

It has affordable rates, as well, and even offers babysitting services for couples who want to spend some time alone.

You can also choose to stay at the Fortuna Boat Hotel while in Budapest, especially if you’re travelling on a budget. After all, the Fortuna Boar hotel is one of the cheapest hotels in Hungary. It still offers nice rooms, though, not to mention a unique experience and a spectacular view of the Danube.

Speaking of views, you might want to consider staying at the Hotel Fagus, too, which provides stunning views of the Loverek forests. The Hotel Fagus is one of the best wellness hotels in Hungary, as well, offering relaxing jacuzzis, a salt cave, a solarium and a steam bath.

Do you want to stay in one of the castles of Hungary? If you answered yes, you might want to check out the Fried Castle Hotel. Of course, you don’t have to stay in one of the hotels in Hungary during your holidays. After all, with all the sights that await you in Hungary, you’ll be spending most of your time out of bed and enjoying every bit of your vacation.
