The Outdoor Capital of the UK – Fort William in Highland

CITYGUIDE - Outdoor

Ambleside is a small town located in northwest England and has a population of only 2600. It happens to be located right at the head of England’s largest lake. The town itself is located within a national park. This makes Ambleside one of the more attractive places in England for fishing, camping, and other outdoor activities and events.

Spacehoppers

Bouncing around the garden on this famous orange inflatable toy with the strange grinning face was a favourite summer activity for thousands of children, thirty-something years ago, in the days before computer games came along and tempted us back indoors.

In the 1970s the spacehopper was one of the most popular outdoor toys on the market. The modern version is just as much fun as the original, with one small difference… it’s also available in a giant size, so adults can relive their childhood by racing spacehoppers up and down the garden.

The spacehopper is more than just a fun outdoor toy, though… it’s also a great way to keep fit. So now you can have some outdoor fun and keep in shape at the same time.

Also for those that like to go hiking just south of Ambleside is the Roman fort of Galava from AD79. Definitely a place to visit for those interested in History. If history is your forte than there is also the Armitt Library and Museum which represents the local history, writers and artists of the past. Not only does Ambleside provide some interesting history but it also was granted a charter by James II to collect tolls.

It is surrounded by lochs and rivers. When you arrive here, you can feel the fresh air through your lungs. There is cruise available down the loch. Most of the people speak Gaelic. Just outside the town is a big aluminum factory.

Ambleside is definitely an attractive place to see for those that are avid fans of outdoor activities. It is a great place to see, hike, climb, and explore. Visit Ambleside when you are visiting the UK

Natural Wealths in Bulgaria: The Rose Valley

Tourism in Bulgaria is being rapidly developed these days. The most famous resorts in Bulgaria such as Sunny Beach and Nessebar are visited by thousands of tourists yearly. Regardless, most of them do not know the true wealth of Bulgaria – the numerous historical, cultural and nature sites. Some of them, such as The Rose Valley, have even made Bulgaria famous worldwide.

Bulgaria is worldwide famous with the cultivation of quality oleaginous rose. Rose water, rose oil, rose concrete, rose absolute are produced and exported abroad.

The oil-bearing rose is one of the country’s brands. Its growth location is at the bottom of its high quality. It is cultivated between the Balkans and Sredna Gora Mountains, in the sub-Balkan fields. Downpours are common on the lands where the roses are cultivated. The forest areas of the nearby mountains surround the place and protect it from winds. Thus, roses are always protected by chill. The soil is also appropriate – slightly sandy, maroon soil. The area rose cultivation has become famous as The Rose Valley.

The luxurious perfumery is made with Bulgarian Rose oil, which consists of more than 200 unique components, created by nature itself. Medicine takes advantage of the rose oil too. It is used for curing pulmonary diseases, gall-stones, in injection solutions and as an anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic ingredient. The scent of the rose is used in the aromatherapy. Perceived by smell, it affects the nerves system and has a physical and psychological effect. Also, the rose flavor affects the muscular system and increases working efficiency. And even more, it also affects the gas circulation, the breathing and heartbeat, the skin temperature, the blood pressure, the ear, the eyesight, etc.

Certified seedlings of oil-breeding roses are produced in Bulgaria. They are planted in autumn. Three years pass until blossoms for brewage are fully grown. The gathering begins in late spring. The roses are gathered manually early in the morning and not later than noon. The blossom should be fresh and not fully blossomed out. Thus, the flavor and humidity are fully preserved. Gathering roses in the afternoon decreases not the quality, but the gathered quantity. That is why till noon are gathered roses for rose oil, and afternoon – for dry blossom. 3000-3500 rose blossom is needed for 1kg rose oil.

From 7000 to 15 000 rose blossoms are needed for one vial (5 grams) of rose oil. One kilogram of blossoms is used for the production of one kilogram rose water.

The Bulgarian rose oil is an award-winner of golden medals at the exhibitions in Paris, London, Philadelphia, Antwerp and Milan.

When Teambuilding Doesn’t Work

My company bosses, in their infinite wisdom, recently put myself and a group of my workmates on a teambuilding camping trip. The outcome has been two colleagues resigning and one undergoing disciplinary action for gross misconduct.

Although attendance on the teambuilding event was not compulsory many signed up out of fear that non-attendance would not be good for their careers. The days were to be packed with potentially fun activities including orienteering, archery, abseiling and raft building. But no sooner had we arrived and things began to go downhill.

There had clearly been a major breakdown in communication as many people apparently had not been told what they needed to bring along. Many people had turned up without sleeping bags and some had even omitted to bring any proper outdoor clothes. This immediately led to arguments between some of my workmates and a small contingent decided this was their cue to go to a nearby pub for some lunchtime refreshment.

The organizers had provided all of the essential camping equipment including optional tents, hammocks and tarpaulins, ideal for the hardier, experienced campers. I chose the log cabin as this was comfortably furnished with proper beds.

When my workmates stumbled back from the bar they were very much the worse for drink. An orienteering exercise had been arranged for the afternoon in which we’d get the chance to enjoy the local woodland. The organizers had set up a treasure hunt that would see us cover around 6 miles, following clues and instructions as we reached each checkpoint. The prospect of walking 6 miles was clearly too much for the group who’d returned from the pub and instead they chose to sit in a clearing smoking, drinking whiskey and telling jokes.

When the evening came round it was time for us to cook our dinner over an open camp fire. The ingredients for our supper consisted of several whole chickens, some potatoes and other vegetables along with some dried fruit and fruit juices. The menu was clearly not to the liking of a few of my colleagues who decided that they would prefer pizza so they got on the phone to a delivery service in a nearby village. This prompted the organisers to call a meeting to remind everybody of what was expected of us while attending their campsite.

Thnings didn’t improve as more alcohol was consumed and people became increasingly restless. The crowd who had gone to the pub for lunch had missed the opportunity to select comfortably bunks in the log cabin so they were expected to sleep in the tents. This didn’t go down well and several said that they would prefer to go to a hotel. When the organisers pointed out that this was not in the spirit of the teambuilding exercise they became quite aggressive and one even threatened one of the organisers.

The outcome was that several of those who were unhappy with the trip ended up going home. Those of us who stuck around had a really excellent time but the organisers will not be inviting us back.

This sorry tale should serve to remind managers that you really need to be certain that you get the buy-in of everybody who attends a teambuilding exercise like this. It’s also important to ensure that everybody knows what is expected of them and what they will get out of the exercise.

Stay Warm With the Right Sleeping Bag

Camping has exploded in popularity as many parents take their children for weekend camping trips. Camping in the United Kingdom is plagued with risk. Not because of potentially encountering Bears or Snakes but due to the uncertain and changeble British weather.

But, as long as yiou have the right camping equipment you and your family can have a lot of fun, regardless of the weather. One of the most important pieces of camping kit has got to be your sleeping bags.

There are an incredible range of sleeping bags to choose from these days, some costing only a few pounds but others that can cost a lot of money. So how can you make the right choice for you and your family?

The first thing to consider is the time of year that you will be using your sleeping bags. If you only expect to be camping during the hopefully warmer summer months then you will not need expensive, arctic quality sleeping bags.

Something else to keep in mind is packing. Will you be hiking with your sleeping bag in a backpack or will it never need to be crammed into a small pack? If you expect to be hiking with your sleeping bag in a backpack then size and weight will be important considerations.

Yet another consideration is who the sleeping bag is for, how big they are and their specific comfort requirements. Some people (including my own partner) are never comfortable sleeping within the confines of a sleeping bag and lots of children prefer to have child size bags.

And finally we must, of course consider the price. The price of sleeping bags, both down and polyester filled, can vary enormously. The most expensive sleeping bags are those that are made for all year round and winter use, often down filled.

Your most economical sleeping bag is likely to be polyester filled and suitable for the warmer summer months only. You will probably also want a sleeping matt or maybe an airbed for sleeping comfort and insulation from the cold ground.

Could You Survive on Insects and Berries?

Do you have any bushcraft skills? If you were lost in the wild do you have the skills to build a shelter, start a fire, find water and locate some food? And would you be able to recognise what is safe to eat?

Living in our modern, convenience food world we have all lost touch with the sources of our food. Some children grow up in our modern cities without any hands-on experience of where their food actually comes from. I once met a young man who had no idea that burgers were made from beef. I can’t imagine what he thought they were made from.

There are no convenience stores or all night supermarkets in the wilderness. It’s a useful skill to be able to recognise what is safe to eat and what is potentially harmful. You may have seen Bear Grylls surviving in some of the most inhospitable locations on the planet where he always finds and eats whatever he can find. Something you may have noticed is that Bear is never without his bushcraft knife, an essential survival tool.

Wild berries can be a valuable form of food. Our ancestors would have gathered nuts, berries and grain when in season and either eaten these raw or prepared them in some way. But some berries can be deadly poisonous.

Yew berries are very poisonous causing many poisonings every year. They are very bright scarlet in colour with an indentation at the base, about 8 to 10mm in diameter. The berries look deceptively appetising which has resulted in many young children being taken to the emergency room.

Deadly Nightshade is another of the berries which puts people in hospital every year. The clue is in the name, but the trick is being able to recognise the plant. This plant is also commonly known as Belladonna, producing sweet berries that can be irresistibly attractive to young children.

A potential source of protein, although somewhat distasteful to many, are insects. Most insects are actually edible, but some taste better than others. Most insects are actually very high in protein but low in fat.Grasshoppers, crickets, wood grubs and mealworms are all a safe bet for eating. Most insects taste better when barbecued and you can even grind them up into a flour like powder.

Birds, rabbits and other small animals are all generally good to eat, but not so easy to catch. This is particularly true if you are lost in the wilderness without any form of weapon. Without a weapon you will possibly need to construct some sort of trap if you really want to catch an animal.

You may have read this thinking that you will never be lost in the wild, so desperately hungry that you would eat your own socks. But this really could happen to you. All you need to do is stray from a main pathway through a forest and you can quickly become disoriented and be unable to find your way back to the path. That’s when you’ll wish you’d paid more attention to Ray Mears Extreme Survival.

Learn About Activity Holidays : Properly Preparing

Preparation advice is the focus of this installment of our guide to activity holidays.

Being prepared when you are planning on activity holidays almost guarantees that you will have a great time! Depending on what type of activity you will be doing, you should make sure that you are both mentally and physically fit, as well as prepared for every eventuality.

Your physical activities should include a sport or exercise that will condition your body and should be done several times a week. You should make sure you work up to a certain intensity level as you get closer to your activity holiday since you will probably be very physical through it with little down time.

Specific practicing for some activities (such as whitewater rafting or caving) might not be possible, but you can prepare specifically for others (such as rock climbing or skiing). If practicing for the specific activities on your holiday isn’t possible, the best fallbacks for preparation are cycling and walking.

You will be given a list that details the type of gear and apparel you will need to bring. You should be sure that each item on that list is with you, since a professional created that list and knows what exactly is needed. In addition to what your tour company advise you to take, you should take only the absolute basics as you’ll probably have to carry your bags (take one large one and a smaller daypack) around more than what you would on a ‘normal’ holiday.

Generally fast-drying, durable and comfortable clothing, worn in layers, is best. You should also carry a second pair of shoes (just in case), a rain suit like “Frog Togs” that can be rolled up, a multi-functional jacket with a built in layering system and a good hat that can offer wind and sun protection. Sunglasses and swimsuits might be the only additional items that will be required.

Your equipment list will let you know if you will need outdoor equipment to take with you like a sleeping bag or a tent or even cooking and food supplies. If you don’t have some of these items, you can check to see if the activity holiday company has any to rent for the duration of the trip. And even though your guide will have an emergency care kit with them, you should have your own basic one with band aids, alcohol swabs, pain relievers and bug repellant in it.

Fun, Fun, Fun And… Camping !

People are practicing camping every days and every summer. More and more are doing it. Your friends, relatives and family can enjoy this great sport. You can spend all the summer or just a day doing camping. Since I was a child, I have been into camping escape. It started out with my family, later, as a teen, I was doing camping with my friends.

My whole family and I love doing camping. I also like doing it alone. Camping is usually practiced the weekend in our family. Driving 2 hours afar from the city, we know a nice camping spot. My kids love this camping place. Breathing air, away from the city, is very important for the health.

An important point in camping is what you will bring as equipment. Be very select about what equipment you will bring during your camping days. Kitchen tools are important and likewise, the tent I am using: the Vario 23 . I use one tent for my children and one tent for myself and my spouse. This tent has 2 main features: light and resistant to water. If you are planning to fish during your camping escape, always bring an additional pole to replace any broken ones.

My wife, children and I did learn over time to appreciate camping a lot. My children love a lot going out in the nature, running and taking walks. To cope with the daily stress, I found out that camping is helping me a lot. For those rainy days, we know some good spots to enjoy camping. All my family and I found out that camping is a great sport. We can simply do it both during sunny and rainy weekends.

My final point is about health and its importance when doing camping. Always bring some medical equipment (kit) with your when going on a camping trip. The nearest hospital can be far away from your camping place and you need to be prepared for any emergency.

The Protective Cocoon – The Sleeping Bag

The day has been relatively without any major mishaps except the few times one slipped and slid down the mountain slope. But weariness has caught on. The mountain sides are slowly being swept by an eerie grey stillness. The camping sites come to sight. There is another burst of energy that comes to push you into the vicinity of the camping site. The dinner must be cooking. May be a wash in the mountain stream to wash away the dust will be good. The thought of finally sliding into the sleeping bag for its warmth was just too enticing.

It is not practical to carry with you a bed when you go camping, trekking, hiking or mountaineering. A sleeping bag is an improvised bed for you to sleep in designed to be carried by you wherever you go. It is a protective bag resembling a blanket with a zipper. It provides the softness of a bed with the soft padding. It keeps you warm with its thermal insulation. There are two types of sleeping bag. The first is the one that looks like a blanket fitted with, on one side or on both side, with a zipper. This can be folded, rolled up and bound with cords or straps and carried in your backpack. The second is the mummy bag as it resembles a mummy. It is broad on the head side and tapers as it goes to the leg side. But this cannot be folded nor can it be easily rolled. It is better stuffed into the compression sack or the stuff sack and carried in your backpack.

There are a variety of sleeping bags that you can buy in the market differing in their water withstanding capacity and insulation capacity. The Marmot Hydrogen 30 sleeping bag is an example of a mummy bag that keeps you comfortable at 30 Fahrenheit.

The sleeping bags differ in its ability to retain heat, insulation capacity and water absorption. The synthetic fill sleeping bag provides faster insulation and warmth even when wet, and does not absorb water easily. But it cannot be easily compressed and takes up more space in the backpack. The down fill bag is lighter, has better heat retention capacity has lower insulation capacity.

Simple Yet Comfortable, Easy Yet Affordable

Tents are commonly used by campers. They are practical as they are portable. They hardly impact the environment which is necessary when one camps in the wilderness. There are different kinds of tents available according to the climate. There is the one-season tent used in summer. This tent can withstand light summer rains. The three-season tent can withstand heavy rains and light snow. This can be used in spring, summer and autumn. The three-season tents can offer you ventilation and protection from insects, moderate rain and wind. But they will not be able to withstand heavy snow.

The four season tents can withstands winter snow, but have less ventilation making it difficult if the climate is hot. These tents are also heavier. There are four season tents that can be converted to three season tents by unzipping a roof panel or by just removing pole sections. There are the expedition tents that are meant to withstand extremes of climate such as heavy snow, very heavy rain and strong winds.

The number of persons going for camping will primarily determine the tent size. The season when you intend to go for camping also will be important. Separate sleeping areas are available in the bigger tents with partitions. There are tents for the rough mountains which have adjustable air vents, sealed seams, strong high performance waterproof canopy and reinforced pole clips. Such a tent is the Marmot Alpinist 2 tent .

The tents are available in different colors. There are those which are in low visibility colors such as tan, green and brown. Bright colors which are highly visible are also used as the tent colors. These bright colors are useful to locate easily when the campers are lost and are searching. They are also easily sighted from the air in case of an aerial search. Camping equipment stores also sell camping tents. These tents are easy to set up. The poles and the canopy of the tent are connected with the help of sleeves and clips. The poles are made of aluminum. These make the tents light weight. Nylon or coated fabric is used usually to make the canopy of the tent.
