In 1899, the gardens were ready, and were opened to the public. However, in 1969 disaster struck and the greenhouses had to be knocked down and rebuilt. This was due to horrendous storm damgage. Today, the David Welch Winter Gardens at Duthie Park are one of Scotland’s favourite garden attractions, and also the largest indoor gardens in the whole of Europe. Each greenhouse has an important collection such as, the Japanese Garden, Temperate House, Victorian House, Tropical House, Fern House and Corridor of Perfumes.

Satrosphere Science Centre

In Aberdeen, the Satrosphere Science Center was one of the first science and discovery centers in Scotland. This interactive, hands-on science center, has over fifty exhibits and live science demonstrations, and opened its’ doors to the public in 1988. Even though the center is aimed at primary age children, the appeal of the exhibits is universal. The center is situated in the old tram sheds, nearby the beach, on Constitution Street. The purpose is to inspire teenagers to become scientist’s, as interest in science courses in universities, is in decline. One of the best loved exhibits at the center is the famous giant soap bubble, where each child can be encompassed within a magic bubble.

Blair Castle

Dating back to the 13th century is Blair Castle, which is the ancestral seat of the Earls and Dukes of Atholl. The building of Blair Castle commenced in 1269, under the instruction of John I Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, a northern acquaintance of the Earl of Atholl. The Earl was away from home, fighting in the Crusade’s, when John I Comyn began the construction of the castle on his land. Upon his return, the Earl complained bitterly to the Scottish King, King Alexander III about the interloper, and his lands were returned. Rather than pulling down the tower than John I Comyn had built, the Earl decided to merge the tower into his own castle. A Great Hall and a series of vaulted chambers were incorporated into the castle over the centuries, by  subsequent Earls. It was the second Duke of Atholl who, in 1740, decided to remodel the castle as a Georgian Mansion.

Killiecrankie Visitor Centre

During the period of the Jacobites Killiecrankie, not a great distance from Pitlochry, found itself filled with the crys of battle. The government soldiers were overwhelmed by the rebel army of the Jacobites, under the control of Bonnie Dundee. During the bloody battle an escaping soldier leapt across the River Garry, which subsequently became known as, Soldier’s Leap. The area around the Pass and gorge were a popular haunt of Queen Victoria.

Fortunately, more than 100 years later the house stands completed in Bellahouston Park because of the efforts and hard work of the engineer Graham Roxburgh and architect Professor Andy Macmillan. Construction started in nineteen eighty nine, halted for a short time but started again in nineteen ninety four thanks to a collaboration between the Glasgow School of Art and the Glasgow City Council.

Beauly Priory

Monks, from the Valliscaulian order, set up a community at Beauly Priory in 13th century. Sadly no-one is able to state the factual date of foundation but it is commonly agreed that is would have been roughly sometime around the year 1230. At that time Sir John Bisset, whose lands were almagamated with the Fraser’s of Lovat, was the patron and landowner of Beauly. Sir John Bisset and the French monks are credited with the naming of Beauly, coming from the French words for beautiful place. Unfortunately, Beauly Priory became derelict following the Scottish Reformation and stone blocks were utilized in the building of other structures. In the year 1913 the ruins of Beauly Priory were handed over to the state for the nation and they are now looked after by Historic Scotland.

Inverness Castle

Over time there have been various structures where Inverness Castle is today, evidence shows that the site had a structure there as far back as 1057. The first Inverness Castle was attacked by King Robert I of Scotland, and nearly destroyed. The castle which appears today was constructed and designed , in 1836, by William Burn. The picturesque castle, constructed of red sandstone, hold a prominent position on top of a cliff looking down across the River Ness and the cathedral on the opposite side. King James I of Scotland conducted parliament in Inverness Castle in 1427, and instructed all the Northern Chieftains to be in attendance. Alarmingly three of these chieftains were later killed for their support of an independent sovereignty.
